2025 Yale Young African Scholars Program Details
The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a focused academic and enrichment initiative for African secondary school students who aim to further their education and want to create a positive impact as young leaders on the continent.
Throughout the program, participants will improve their academic abilities, get help with university admissions and financial aid applications, and connect with other young leaders from across Africa. Students can attend only one session, but they can choose their preferred session(s) on the YYAS application form.
Participants will not only boost their academic skills but also receive guidance on university admissions and career options. After the program, students will be matched with mentors who will support them during the university application process.
2025 Yale Young African Scholars Program Requirements
For you to be eligible for the Yale Young African Scholars Program, you must:
- Be between 14 and 18 years old on the program dates in 2025 (born between August 18, 2006, and July 17, 2011).
- Be able to engage in a challenging academic program conducted in English.
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. Applications from refugees living in Africa are also accepted.
- Currently attend school in an African country.
- Be a 10th or 11th grade student (or the equivalent internationally).
2025 Yale Young African Scholars Program Duration and Reward
To ensure that the program is open to students from all financial backgrounds, there is no fee to participate in YYAS.
The YYAS Summit is completely free, covering tuition, accommodation, meals, and all academic materials.
Program Duration:
- YYAS Online College Prep Workshop (6 days): July 17 – 22, 2025
- YYAS Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya; 9 days): August 9 – 17, 2025
Required Documents for Yale Young African Scholars Program
All applicants must provide the following materials:
- A list of activities
- One 400-word essay and one 200-word response
- Two brief responses (280 characters each)
- An official school transcript
- One recommender (who will have to complete the YYGS Recommendation Form only)
- Application fee ($70 for Early Action and $85 for Regular Decision)
